Group Chats

Group chats start from the same sheet as a 1:1 conversation, just on a different tab.

Creating a group

  1. Open Chats and tap New.
  2. Switch to the Group tab.
  3. Enter a name for the group.
  4. Search for people by name or @handle, then tap each result to add them. Selected members appear as removable chips — tap the x on a chip to take someone off the list before creating the group.
  5. Once you’ve added at least one other member and named the group, tap Create Group. The button shows a live count of how many members you’ve selected.

There’s no fixed cap on group size — add as many people as the conversation needs.

Group roles: owner, admin, and member

Every group has one owner (the creator, shown with a star) and can have any number of admins (shown with a shield). Everyone else is a plain member.

  • Admins can add members and remove plain members, but can’t act on each other or on the owner.
  • Only the owner can promote a member to admin, demote an admin, transfer ownership to someone else, or delete the group entirely.
  • Anyone can leave a group at any time.

Managing a group

Open a group chat and tap its name (or the menu) to reach Group settings.

  1. From Group settings, tap Add member to search for and add someone new.
  2. Tap any member in the list to open their actions: Make admin / Remove admin, Make owner, Block, or Remove from group. Which options you see depends on your role and theirs — for example, only the owner can promote another member to admin or hand over ownership.
  3. If you’re the owner, tap the group photo or the pencil next to the group name to change either one.
  4. The owner can also turn NERD off for the group from Group settings, if they’d rather the group’s chat not respond to it.

Removing someone is immediate — they lose access to the conversation right away. Nuts asks you to confirm before removing a member, transferring ownership, or deleting a group, since none of those can be undone.

To leave a group yourself, open Group settings and tap Leave group at the bottom. If you’re the owner, you’ll also see Delete group, which removes the conversation for everyone.

On the web

Group creation and management work the same way on nuts.social: click New in your chats list, switch to the Group tab, and use the group settings drawer to manage members and roles. Labels and permissions match the app exactly.
