Muting a Chat & Notification Controls
If a busy group or community chat is generating more notifications than you want, you can mute it without leaving the conversation.
- Open the group or community chat.
- Tap the ⋯ menu in the chat header.
- Choose Mute notifications.
Muting is a simple on/off switch for that conversation — there’s no separate duration to pick. To turn notifications back on, open the same menu and choose Unmute notifications; the option swaps automatically once a chat is muted.
Muting is currently available for group and community chats. It isn’t yet an option for one-on-one direct messages — if you want to quiet a specific person’s DMs, your best option today is your Notification Settings, which control notifications by category rather than per conversation.
How this relates to your notification settings
Per-chat mute and your global Notification Settings work at different levels:
- Muting a chat only affects that one conversation, and doesn’t change any of your other notification preferences.
- Notification Settings control what you get notified about across the whole app — new messages, mentions, reactions, and more.
Muting a chat is the fastest way to quiet one specific conversation. For control over notification categories across the whole app — mentions, reactions, follows, and more — head to Notification Settings.
On the web
Per-chat mute isn’t available yet on nuts.social. If you need to quiet a conversation, use Notification Settings there, or mute the chat from the app — your account settings apply everywhere you’re signed in.
