What is a Live Nut Room?

Live Nut is the name for Nuts’ call room. It’s a single piece of UI — the same dark, ambient room with a header, a control bar, and floating reactions — and it shows up in three places:

  • A 1:1 call you start from a direct message.
  • A group call you start from a group chat.
  • A community livestream you join from inside a community.

Instead of building a separate calling experience for each of those, Nuts drops you into the same room every time. Once you’re in, it looks and behaves the same way: your header reads “Live Nut” with a small pulsing red dot, a timer counts up once you’re connected, and the same reaction and control bar sits at the bottom.

Voice first, video if you want it

Every call starts as a voice call. If you want video, you turn your camera on from inside the room — there’s no separate “hang up and start a video call” step. On mobile you can also start a call as a video call directly from a direct message (see Starting a 1:1 or Group Call); on the web, every call starts as voice and you switch your camera on once you’re in the room.

Two contexts, one room

Chats — When you start a call from a DM or a group chat, everyone who joins is a full participant: mic on by default, camera optional, and everyone can see and hear everyone else.

Communities — When a community goes live, the room switches into audience mode: the community’s moderators broadcast, and everyone else joins as a viewer who can watch and react but doesn’t get mic or camera controls. Going live in a community, and the moderator tools around it, are covered in the Communities section — this section focuses on the call room itself and on calls started from a chat.

Where the name shows up

“Live Nut” isn’t just the header title. You’ll see it in a few other places too:

  • The invite panel inside a call is titled “Invite to Live Nut.”
  • An incoming call from a friend reads “wants you in their Live Nut,” with a subtitle of “Live Nut · tap to crack in.”
  • The minimized call pill, which stays on screen if you back out of the room without hanging up, keeps the same “Live Nut” label and timer.

On the web

The web app uses the exact same room component as the app, so a call or livestream looks and behaves the same whether you or the other person are on Android, iOS, or the web. The one difference is how you get into the room — see Starting a 1:1 or Group Call for the per-platform entry points.
