Moderation & Auto-Mod

Every community on Nuts has moderators, and every piece of content on Nuts also passes through automated review. This page explains both, from the perspective of a member or a community owner — not the internal mechanics.

Community moderators

A community always has at least one moderator: its creator. Creators can add other members as moderators too. Moderators are the people who review reported content within that community and decide, together, whether it should stay up or come down.

Choosing how your community is moderated

When you create a community, you choose how its moderator team is managed. This choice is made once, at creation, and can’t be changed afterward.

  • Autopilot — Moderation scales automatically as your community grows. Once it reaches 50 members, moderators are assigned dynamically based on member reputation, so the team adjusts on its own over time.
  • Manual — You’re in full control. You hand-pick your own moderator team to help manage flags and live chats.

Whichever mode you choose, you — as the owner — always retain full control over your community’s settings, rules, and branding. Moderators help enforce the rules; they don’t replace the owner.

Adding and removing moderators

If you run a Manual community, you manage your moderator list from Community Settings. Search for a member by handle and add them as a moderator; remove someone from the list at any time. This moderator list is what matters most for Manual communities — Autopilot communities adjust their team automatically as described above.

On the web

Adding and removing individual moderators is currently available from Community Settings on the web app. If you’re on mobile, use nuts.social in a browser to manage your community’s moderator list directly.

How reported content gets reviewed

When a post or comment is reported (see Reporting Content & Users), it shows up in that community’s moderation queue, visible to its moderators. Moderators vote on whether to remove or allow the content; once enough of them agree, that decision is applied automatically. This applies the same way whether the community is Autopilot or Manual — it only changes how the moderator team itself is put together.

Moderators can also request that an entire community be deleted, if they believe it should be — for example, a community that’s become unmanageable or exists only to break the rules. Other moderators vote on that request the same way they vote on individual pieces of content.

Automated moderation

Separately from community moderators, Nuts runs automated review across the platform on all content, including video. This happens automatically in the background as content is posted — it doesn’t require a member to report something first, and it works independently of how a community is moderated. Content that clearly violates the Community Guidelines can be flagged or removed by this system on its own.

Automated review and community moderators work together, not instead of each other: moderators handle the judgment calls that need community context, while automated review catches clear violations at scale, including in video content that would otherwise be slow for a person to review.
