Moderators & Rules

Every community has at least one moderator: its creator, added automatically when the community is created. How the rest of the moderator team comes together depends on a choice made when the community was set up — Autopilot or Manual.

Autopilot vs. Manual

This is chosen once, during community creation, and can’t be changed afterward:

  • Autopilot — moderation scales automatically as the community grows. You moderate solo until it reaches 50 members; after that, Nuts promotes the members with the most community reputation to moderator automatically (you always stay one). The team keeps growing with the community — roughly 3 moderators by 200 members, 5 by 500, and 7 beyond that.
  • Manual — you’re in full control from the start. You hand-pick every moderator yourself.

Whichever mode a community uses, its owner always keeps full control over settings, rules, and branding — moderators help enforce the rules, they don’t replace the owner.

Adding and removing moderators

This is managed by the owner from Community Settings on the web app:

  1. Open the community, tap , then Settings.
  2. Scroll to moderator management and type into Search user to add as moderator….
  3. Tap a result to add them as a moderator.
  4. To remove someone, tap the X next to their name.

This matters most for Manual communities, where you’re building the team by hand. Autopilot communities grow their team on their own as described above, though you can still add or remove people manually at any time.

On mobile

Adding and removing moderators isn’t available in the app yet — use nuts.social to manage a community’s moderator list. On mobile, you can see the current owner and moderators (read-only) by opening a community and tapping Info.

Where rules live

A community’s rules are set from Community Settings and visible to every visitor, member or not, from the community page — tap About (web) or Info (app) to see the full numbered list, alongside who’s moderating.

How moderators enforce the rules

Moderators review reported posts and comments in the community’s moderation queue and vote on whether they should stay up or come down; once enough moderators agree, that decision applies automatically. For the full picture of how reported content is reviewed — including Nuts’ automated review — see Moderation & Auto-Mod.
